I Want To Learn How To Drive

At Trubicars, we recognize that the desire behind learning to drive unlocks a new sense of freedom and independence. We also recognize that the process of getting your license can be a confusing or difficult process. In Canada, throughout each province, license regulations and requirements vary, that’s why Trubicars has created this post to inform you how to go about getting your license in Ontario. It’s important to know that there are 15 different types of licenses in Ontario, all of which certify you to drive a different type of vehicle. In order to drive a car, van, or small truck, you will need a G-class license. Furthermore, it is worth noting that before you can hold any other class license, a G-class license is required (except for a motorcycle license). Ontario’s G license is a graduated licensing system.

Getting Your License in Ontario
In order to operate a motorized vehicle and hold a G-class Ontario driver’s license you must:
  • Be 16 years of age
  • Pass an eye test
  • Pass a knowledge test about the rules of the road

Once you pass your eye and knowledge tests, you will have obtained a G1 license.

With a G1 License you must:

  • Not drive between midnight and 5 am
  • Ensure every passenger in the car with you wears a functioning seatbelt
  • Not drive on 400 series or high-speed highways
  • Maintain a zero blood alcohol level
You must also:
  • Drive with a fully licensed driver who has at least 4 years of driving experience

In most scenarios, you practice with your G1 license for 12 months before you take your G2 road test and advance to the next level of the graduated licensing system.

When you take and pass your G2 Road Test (G1 Exit test) you will practice with your G2 license for 12 months. Your G2 Road test will test you on driving skills such as: Parallel parking, 3-Point turns, lane changes, and other basic driving skills.

With a G2 license you can:

  • Drive without an experienced driver in the vehicle
  • Drive on all Ontario roads
  • Drive during any time of day or night
However, you still must:
  • Maintain a zero-blood alcohol level
  • Ensure every passenger in the car with you wears a functioning seatbelt

After 12 months of holding a G2 License, you can take your G Road Test (G2 exit test) which covers advanced driving skills such as: Highway driving, driving on major roads, intersections and all other fundamental elements.

Once you pass your G Road Test (G2 Exit test) you will now have obtained a fully unrestricted driving license for Ontario!
